IP Logged | What would you guys do in this situation. I have a narrow slip with a 30' to my port. I am in a 408. across from my slip is a 50' which is docked with its starboard side facing my slip. When leaving my slip is it better to engage the port side shifter forward to turn to starboard and also allow the stern to clear the 30' bow as well as turning tight enough for my bow to clear the 50' OR should I engage the starboard shifter in reverse? Both methods turn the boat in the same direction. |

You want to use the engines to turn the vessel as well as maintain control against the wind and current. If they are pushing you forward then shifting in reverse will turn the vessel while also counteracting your forward momentum keeping you from sliding into the 50'. If wind and current are pushing you backwards shift forward again to turn while avoiding being pushed into the 30'.
It all depends on the situation. |

Home Port: Clinton CT. IP Logged | I would leave the wheel centered and not turn it at all- at low speed the rudders do not have enough water passsing under them to turn the boat effectively and you will be off center when you apply throttle after leaving the fairway.
Assuming no wind or current, with both engines at idle throttle and in neutral, "pop" them both in and out of forward gear and back into neutral (think retro rockets) until your stern just clears the finger. Then put the port shifter forward the starboard shifter in reverse. The boat will start to turn to starboard. Then apply a small amount of throttle to the starboard (reversed) engine for a couple of seconds and then back to idle speed. This will (a) accelerate the turn and (b) back you off slightly from the 50 footer in front of you. When the boat is about halfway turned to starboard, put both engines in neutral and the momentum should allow boat should complete the turn on its own. Then pop both gear shifters into forward and off you go.
