Does anyone have a good product to use in the AC drip pans where rust forms from the condensation water. I have rust in all pans and want to prevent a "rust thru". I have seen ads for solutions that you can put in the pan and it turns the rust black and forms a coating. Looking for a tried and proven answer.

I am interested in this as well. One question; Why aren't the pans made out of plastic? Seems to me that it would be cheaper, lighter, quieter, etc. etc. In houses, the pans under washing machines are plastic.

you are probably talking about the solution that I have used on older cars to stop rust. It is a chemical reaction that follows that turns the rust black and kind of seals it in. I have used it on small spots never on a larger surface.

Good question why they made out of tin can stock, except it is also cheap

I don't know about tried and proven, but the thought has occurred to me a couple of times that it might be worth a try to just give the drip pans a good coating of an epoxy-based spray paint sometime when they're good and dry.  I'm not suggesting that you remove the pans to spray them, as thay would require removing the A/C units first; I'd think that just giving them a good shot of epoxy spray paint for as much of each pan as you can reach would be a big improvement.  (I haven't done this myself yet because the biggest source of annoyance, the aft cabin A/C unit on our 408, died from a water leak in its condenser coil earlier this year and had to be replaced with one of the newer "Turbo" units, which has an integral plastic drip pan.  The other A/C units are on my list of things to do on the boat when the weather cools down and I get the time and/or gumption to deal with them.)

I broke down and purchased a new stainless pan for my forward 10000BTU as mine had rusted through. I leave mine is the de humidifier mode during the week so the pan is always wet. I will say after the change the forward stateroom smells "crisper". Let's face it, when the pan is full of rust some of that dank smell will be pulled through the system.

where do you buy that stainless pan from? Is it a big job to change it? Did you have to pull the whole unit?

I got it from Ocean Options (local Marine Air dealer). I took the unit to them to replace the pan. It is not simple as everything is riveted in the pan and when you remove the pan all of the components are just hanging loose. A two person job.
