I need some windlass advice. I have a Lewmar vertical windlass on my 06 368. Worked well several times. Now is slipping,ie. the line and chain can be retrieved only by hand tensioning the line or chain then activating the motor. At that point it will pull in a foot or two then spin without engaging the line or the chain. Is this an internal tensioning issue? I recieved no manual or printed material with the boat, and I'm not sure where to start. Thanks. OB

Did you tighten the gypsy (using the centre socket and winch handle)? Do you have the winch?

No. Did not get one. Guess that's the first step. I've looked at winch handles in Defender for $30 to $60 and then there is the "emergency recovery handle for $170. I suspect the pricy one pulls the anchor up and the lower price is for tensioning only? Thanks. OB

You can usually tighten it enough with the flat of your hand, and just press down and tighten. Or, use one of those rubber things for opening jars. Does not take a ton of pressure to tighten that up.

I have never figured out how the emergency retrieval with the winch would work. Except brute muscle but with 40 ft depth the 45 lbs anchor is small weight compared to the chain itself. Is there even a way to do it?

The tightening of the clutch is easy and another question is when should it slip? ie how tight should it be?

My 2006 391 has the Lewmar's Concept 1 windlass which does not have manual emergency recovery.

Here is a link to the manual:
See Page 13 of the owners manual. Ocean Range is a different model than Concept 1.

The gypsy should be tight enough so that the rode and chain do not slip. You do not need the expensive winch handles since the windlass probably does not have a manual recovery function, those expensive handles are mostly for sail boat that use a lot of winches for lines.

Anthony, I will buy your extra handle. Send me a PM and we will arrange the details. Thanks.
